2 Iga-1 Shigaraki Jars by Watanabe Aiko
Today I visited Watanabe Aiko in Iga, she’s one of Japan’s only female potters that works in the two anagama-traditions of Iga and Shigaraki: she has very fine firings on her classical forms. Here are three such work, the two smaller ones being Iga and the larger Shigaraki; the smallest is 18cm.tallx18cm. wide and is Sold, the middle sized tsubo is 32cm.tallx29cm. and is Sold; the large Shigaraki tsubo is 41.5cm.tallx37cm. and is Sold; all in perfect condition, the first two with signed boxes and the Shigaraki with a signed wooden placard. Watanabe Aiko (b.1971- ) is originally from Osaka, she graduated from Saga University of Art (like Kako Katsumi) studying painting, and later fell in love with the anagama of Shigaraki. She built her first anagama kiln in Iga in 2001. She built her second kiln in 2003 and has been getting greater media attention as of late, being one of several potters featured in the magazine Tojiro’s “Anagama Feature.”
