Iga Sculpture-Vessel by Kojima Kenji
Kojima Kenji (b.1953) is an Iga veteran with an impressive career here in Japan, his works are little known in the West. I think just by looking at this most impressive bold and rich firing one can get a sense of his artistry and mastery of Iga. In perfect condition with a signed box, signed on base, 31cm.tallx40cm.x37cm. Kojima was born in Aichi Prefecture and graduated from the Tokoname Ceramic Vocational High School in 1971. In 1973 he moved to Iga and spent a year–his work was accepted to the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition–there before doing a five-year apprenticeship in Bizen with Konishi Tozo. He returned to Iga in 1979 where he researched old kiln sites and built an anagama, which he still fires today. In 1979 The National Museum of Denmark acquired one Kojima work. His main Japan exhibitions are at Mitsukoshi, Takashimaya, Matsuzakaya, and Daimaru.
