Ash-Glazed-Nerikomi Yunomi Pair by Ueda Tsuneji
Thanks to all who have viewed our Minegishi exhibition--which will be online until the 28th--and from today we'll continue with various works that have found their way to our gallery. The great mingei potter Ueda Tsuneji (1914-1987) was master of the Kinozara-yama kiln in Kyoto which he opened in 1936. An apprentice of Kawai Kanjiro, Ueda studied the difficult mosaic-marbled style known as neriage or nerikomi with the great Kawai Kanjiro who reinvented this Chinese T'ang dynasty style. Ueda's work is in the Japan Folk Crafts Museum as well as many prominent private collections. We've handled quite a few Ueda works over the years, yet this is the first yunomi set, and it seems to have been an exhibited pair as evidenced by the seals on the base--#31. Each is sturdy with distinctive glazing and marble effects; each in perfect condition with a single-signed box, 9.5cm.tall.
