Rare Bizen Tea Set by Yamamoto Toshu
This Yamamoto Toshu(1904-1994) tea set is the first ever seen by our gallery; six yunomi and one large teapot/kyusu that appear to have never been used, there’s still a piece of straw in the kyusu. That is how works were packed way back when and this set dates back to the 60s and shows on the signed box that he was then designated an Okayama Intangible Cultural Property, that occurred in 1959. In 1987 he was designated a Living National Treasure and is known as ‘The Master of the Wheel. He was also a teacher of many outside the Bizen tradition including Kato Yasukage XIV and Higuchi Masayuki, both from the Mino tradition.
