Iron-Hakeme 'Bottle' by Takenaka Ko
Takenaka Ko(b.1941-) is a white porcelain specialist based in Kyoto; in 1995 he was designated a Kyoto Intangible Cultural Property. He's had a very successful career within and outside of Japan, even having a piece displayed now at the 'Contemporary Clay' exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. This exhibition will travel to NYC this fall. I've seen many Takenaka pots over the years yet never one like this tetsu-hakeme(iron brush) bottle that has a very strong Zen calligraphy feel on the four distinctive sides. The way Takenaka swept the brush over the porcelain body gives intense motion--like a waterfall--and the eye is riveted to the frozen motion. Takenaka is listed in the 'The Encyclopedia of Japanese Ceramics' and is also featured in 'Japanese Studio Crafts' published by the V&A in London. He studied with Living National Treasure Kondo Yuzo and established his own kiln in 1970. In perfect condition with a signed box, stands 22.5cm.tall and is 12cm.wide, signed on base, a fine museum quality piece.
