Tokkuri
Tall Agano Late Edo Period Tokkuri
What a wonderful example of mingei or folk crafts from the Agano kilns. This whimsical piece has a trailed octopus design on the front and back. The lustrous brown glaze softens the whole form. The Agano tokkuri can also be used as a vase, one that is quite calm and confident in its character. Agano is a quiet folk craft ware that came into the spotlight after Tea master Kobori Enshu (1575-1647) took the style under his wing and designated it as one of his 'Seven kilns.' Part of the process of making the piece was dipping it in a vat; the place where the potter gripped the piece is clearly seen in the finger impressions around the base; this is called yubi-ato. In perfect condition, 23cm.tall and 10cm.wide. Quite rare, and I also will be offering three also rare Naeshirogawa pieces in the coming days, also from the 19th century, see preview photo.
