Bizen Chawan by Mori Seishi
There's something very primitive in Mori Seishi's Bizen, possibly his organic forms or the way he fires his anagama. I've always admired his work for being not only fine Bizen, yet also for being on the fringe of the Bizen world. This chawan illustrates the point; the form is almost like a rounded Yayoi period pot, while the firing is intense like a Kanzaki Shigaraki pot. A rich goma build-up on the front drips over the chawan in an impressionistic way and contrasts exceptionally well with the deep purple shiso color. The rounded form rests in the palms like a prayer and the compact kodai-foot balances the chawan like a Koetsu Raku chawan. In perfect condition with a signed box, 9cm.tall and 14.3cm.across, signed on base. Mori(1944-) was born in Bizen to the famous Mori family, his father was Chikusan and his brother is Tozan. He's exhibited widely in Japan at fine galleries such as Kuroda in Tokyo, as well as the Japan Traditional Arts and Crafts juried exhibition.
