Asahi-yaki began at the end of the Momoyama period (early 17th C.) near Kyoto when the potter Tosaku started to use the Asahi stamp. The Tea master Kobori Enshu (1579-1647) was a patron of the Asahi kilns and thereafter Asahi became known as one of his 'Seven Kilns.' Now we find the 15th in the Asahi potters line. This classic/elegant chawan was made by the 14th generation Asahi potter Matsubayashi HosaiXIV/Yukoan (1921-2004). It has distinctive 'fawn spot' markings only known on Asahi pottery. The form is a tenmoku style perfectly thrown by a true chawan master. A museum piece in perfect condition with a signed box, 8cm.tall and 13cm.wide, stamped on base. Like holding a poem.....
