Bizen Ha-Sun Plate by Nakamura Makoto
Bizen's Nakamura Makoto makes some of the finest tableware---as well as shuki---in all of Bizen. His works have a warmth and feel that places him right up there with Rosanjin for Bizen serving vessels. Nakamura loves Rosanjin's Bizen and told me he often studied them as well as Kaneshige Toyo. Here is one of the finest Nakamura plates I've ever come across in terms of coloration with the orange roundel--very clear--looking like the setting sun or harvest moon. The clay has textured feel as he draped and paddled the work. The Japanese measure plates in increments called 'sun' and one sun is 3.03 centimeters; this is an eight(ha)-sun plate and a bit over the actual calculation at 26cm.wide, it stands 4.5cm.tall, signed on base and with a signed box--Bizen Ha-Sun.
