Sugiura Yasuyoshi(1949-) graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1973 and is known for his large stone form (to-seki) installations that can be found in many museum gardens throughout Japan, including the Tochigi and Gifu Prefectural Museums and the Aichi Ceramic Art Museum, as well as his delicate, yet powerful clay creations of various plant life and his colorful vessels; as can be seen he is quite a diverse artist. The first ever English interview with Sugiura can be read on e-yakimono. Just last week a large Sugiura exhibition began in Yokohama at the Kanagawa Prefectural Hall Gallery. This tall henko jar has a form the resembles Kamoda Shoji, yet the earthy textures and color pattern are distinctively Sugiura. The henko dates to 1985 or thereabouts. After you read the interview you'll know why he is an important contemporary Japanese ceramic artist. In perfect condition with a signed box, 30cm.tall, 13.5cm.across and 5.5cm.deep.
