Kato Takahiko Shigaraki Tsubo and Exhibition Scene
Kato's workshop is surrounded on one side by a hill where he does get some clay from and beautiful green tea fields. When he fires all sorts of animals come to have a look, deer, monkeys, and tanuki. Surrounded and inspired by nature, Kato's forms show a natural power and yet retain a sense of refinement as well. He fires either one of his two anagama for about three days and says the loading is by far the most important aspect of it all. The placement of pieces dictate the flow of the flame and thus the way ash falls and melts. Mastering of such firings only comes with experience and it's no exaggeration to say Kato is a master at firing his kilns.
