Hagi 'Leaf' Serving Bowl by Udagawa Hosei
Udagawa Hosei(1946-1993) was a wonderful Hagi potter who made some outstanding Shiro-Hagi (shiro is white) much in the vein of Miwa Kyusetsu XI (We'll be offering a Miwa chawan and guinomi soon). Udagawa studied with his brother Seikoku, and established his own kiln in 1982. He exhibited in Tokyo at Kuroda Toen and had a very loyal following; myself included. It was a great loss, much like Furutani Michio, when he passed on....his work and spirit live on. Udagawa's work is increasingly hard to find and we were lucky to have this wild leaf bowl come to us from a large Tokyo chadogu collection, from which we'll be offering many pieces in the coming days/weeks/months. What is striking about this Udagawa bowl is the natural form along with the intense contrast of the white Hagi glaze inside the bowl, one half finely crazed and the other spread apart, delightful. In perfect condition with a signed box, stamped on base, 6.5cm.tall and 25cm.wide.
