Bizen Shusai 'Fish' Vase by Yamamoto Izuru
Yamamoto Izuru(1944-) is the fourth son of the late Bizen Living National Treasure Yamamoto Toshu. Izuru's known for his interesting forms and studies on clay and the combining of different clays to bring out different colors on pieces, this is called shusai. Here is a fine shusai example in what Izuru calls a 'fish' form. There are five bands over the textured body that reminds me of Meiji period sencha cups where the potters rubbed walnut shells on the body to create this type of texture. I wonder if that's how Izuru also went about it. Izuru studied with his father starting in 1970 after studying sculpture at Musashino University of Art in Tokyo. He's won the prestigious Grand Prize at the Tanabe Museum of Art's Contemporary Tea Forms Exhibition and is a popular Bizen ceramic artist. In perfect condition with a signed box, 23cm.tall and 16.5cm.wide, signed on base, from a private Tokyo collection.
