Persian Blue Vase by Kato Kenji
Here is a square Persian blue vase with underglaze designs by Mino veteran Kato Kenji(1933-). Kato's specialty is his "toruko-ao" or Turkish Blue glaze. After graduating from the Kyoto University of Fine Art, Kato apprenticed under Kyoto legend Tomimoto Kenkichi. After this apprenticeship, Kato embarked on an internationally-successful career, including membership in IAC. This is the first square jar of Kato's I've come across in 20 years and the interlocking-arched design on each side adds depth to the overall form, the tinged lip is the period. It stands 17.8cm.tall and 10cm.across on each side, signed on base and signed box.
