Black Bizen Guinomi by Isezaki Jun
As many of you know, Bizen was given another Living National Treasure recently, Isezaki Jun(1936-). This makes him the fifth LNT from Bizen---the highest of any style--joining Kaneshge Toyo, Fujiwara Kei, Yamamoto Toshu and Fujiwara Yu. More about Isezaki can be read on on www.e-yakimono.net. A recently popular Bizen style is called kuro-Bizen with kuro meaning black. Before firing the potter will brush on a dark iron slip that fires black. Different fly-ash in the kiln creates the goma and other markings that offer a pleasing contrast on the black lacquer-like surface. I particularly find the front on this Isezaki kuro-Bizen guinomi quite mesmerizing. In perfect condition with a signed box, 5.5cm.tall and 7.0cm.wide. Look for Isezaki's debut LNT exhibition in May at Tenmaya, Okayama and in the fall at Mitsukoshi in Tokyo.
