Tall Bizen Vase by Miyao Masahiro
I was in Bizen last week leading a group of 12 Japanese Ceramic Society members; it was an uncanny sight indeed to see! We turned a few heads; this curly headed gaijin with 12 senior Japanese following. I was able to find a few great works and will be offering them in the coming days and next week by Wakimoto Hiroyuki, Yokoyama Naoki, Takariki Yoshiteru, Iwamoto Tetsuya and four pieces by Miyao Masahiro. I've seen Miyao's work in photos, yet this was the first time to see in person; the work 'blew me away.' The colors are spellbinding and his forms are sharp and clean. Miyao(1970-) studied under Yamamoto Yuichi (Toshu's son and Okayama ICP) starting in 1995 and established his own kiln in 2001. He is a fresh star for Bizen in my book. Well, he has already received quite a bit or recognition at major exhibitions including awards at the Okayama Prefectural Art exhibition, Tanabe Museum's Tea Forms exhibition and being accepted into the Japan Ceramic Art, Asahi and Japanese Traditional Arts and Crafts regional exhibitions. I'm sure you can see why from these four pieces. Each is in perfect condition, no boxes, and this tall form is 42cm.tall and 17cm.across. You'll surely be seeing more works of Miyao's offered by us in the coming months and years. "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." M.G.
