Bizen Kabura Vase/Flask by Yokoyama Naoki
We continue this weeks offerings again with Bizen works selected from Robert's recent visit there. Yokoyama Naoki(1970-) has captured our senses for a few reasons, one being form and the other his splendid 'marbled clay flavor' that is very much a delight to view and use. In a preview photo you'll see other Yokoyama pieces to be offered this week including two chawan, mizusashi, tokkuri, guinomi and various yunomi/cups. This large vase is known as a kabura---turnip--tokkuri and was tradtionaly used on ships. Now such forms are used for flowers. The form is ancient yet the firing is fresh and alive. A piece was fired upside-down over the neck and this accounts for the different hues above the shoulder along with rice straw. In perfect condition with a signed box, 21cm.tall and 20cm.wide at waist. More about Yokoyama in our archives section. Also look for Karatsu works soon as Robert has just returned from there.
