White Glaze/Black Design Vase by Fujihira Shin
This is the first Fujihira Shin (1922-2012) work we've had the pleasure/honor to offer. Not for lack to trying, I may add. For those of you not familiar with this wonderful Kyoto potter, please see www.e-yakimono.net, or if you happen to be in or coming to Tokyo, don't miss his solo exhibition at the Musee Tomo or in Nara at the Paramita Museum. He is a rare ceramic artist in having such exhibitions at museums and a recent issue of Honoho Geijutsu was devoted to him. His honors and exhibitions are too long to list. I find his work always intriguing and always full of emotion. This tall cylindrical jar with a light creamy white crackled glaze and black 'fossil' design is no different. At first I really had to look close to make sure Fujihira hadn't embedded a fossil into the side, so realistic the design is. It evokes a feeling of mystery and spine-tingling wonder. The form is very organic and has a beautiful rhythm to it while the back white glaze feels like a subtle fresco wall. In perfect condition with a signed box, 27.8cm.tall and 15cm.wide at base, stamped Shin on base. A photo tour of Fujihira's Tokyo exhibition can be seen on www.e-yakimono.net.
