Other than urban-stylish potter Ichino Masahiko, another great potter in Tamba is Nishihata Tadashi (1948 -), the son of excellent Tamba potter Nishihata Sueharu. Nishihata apprenticed to his father in 1969, and since has went on to win many awards, such as the Grand Prize at the Tanabe Museum's Tea Forms Exhibition and the Dento Kogei Ten, for example. He exhibits at many fine galleries, namely Mitsukoshi, and is known for his great firing techniques and powerful kiln effects. This "shinogi," or laterally incised tsubo is extremely well shaped, glazed, and fired. The multitude of landscapes that arise from the haiyu-milky ash glaze are exceptional, and the form is well-balanced, cut, and has an enormous presence that does not tire the senses or get boring. Nishihata is an important Tamba artist, and this tsubo jar/vase exhibits his ample abilities. This piece is 27cm tall, 34cm in diameter, comes with a signed box and a "toureki" (potter history) that we have discovered to be his father's, and is in perfect condition, although there is a small crevice that appears on the base that Nishihata intentionally chipped to remove the piece from the kiln.
