Shinsha Henko Tsubo by Kawai Takeichi
Kawai Takeichi(1908-1989) had a very prolific career as a mingei potter. He was based in Kyoto and studied with his legendary uncle Kawai Kanjiro starting in 1927 and continued his studies and collaborations with Kanjiro for close to forty years. His pieces are in museums throughout the world and in many private collections. He learned much from Kanjiro, as can be seen in this Shinsha (red copper glaze) tsubo. The Shinsha glaze was one of Kanjiro's specialties, and Living National Treasure Hamada Shoji once said that no other does it better than Kawai Kanjiro. Takeichi adopts his uncle's glaze, and gives this unique henko shape great life and power. The form is interesting, with its shouldered neck and the "feet" like base. Can be used as a vase for flowers, or can stand out as a wonderful objet d'art. A jar/vase with power and elegance, this piece is 17cm tall, 13cm wide, 7cm long, comes with a signed box and is in perfect condition.
