Shino Serving Bowl by Wakao Toshisada
Born in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture in 1933, Wakao Toshisada has risen to critical acclaim and popularity for his "Rinpa" style Shino and other Mino wares. Just last year (2003) he was designated a Gifu Prefecture Intangible Cultural Property holder. His work is at once flamboyant but sensitive, with intricate underglaze patterns of flowers and animals. Perhaps one can call Wakao the "epitome" of a grand, luxurious style of Shino. Here is an exquisite large Shino serving bowl with a heron standing between two lotus leaves. It stands on three small 'feet' and is in perfect condition with a signed box, 8.5cm.tall and 28.0cm.across.
