Oribe Vessel by Kato Shigetaka
Kato Shigetaka (1927-)is the third son of the late Kato Tokuro and younger brother of Okabe Mineo. Shigetaka has had his own successful career winning the Japan Ceramic Society Prize and having a Shino work featured on the cover of the 'Modern Japanese Ceramics in American Collections' exhibition catalog published by the Japan Society, NY in 1993. Kato, believe it or not, had his first exhibition in Tokyo in 1988---he started in clay with his father in 1945 and assisted Tokuro as well as making his own works, including dozens of ceramic walls in buildings throughout Japan. Here is a very strong and unusual Oribe objet that Kato has titled Mebae or 'Sprouting.' It does appear alive with reptilian skin----it really is quite an amazing work, circa 1964. Oribe will very much be in the news soon as an unprecedented exhibition opens at the Met in NYC next month. In perfect condition with a signed box, 21.2cm.tall and 23.0cm.across, signed shi on base.
