Shigaraki Uzukumaru by Tsujimura Kai
One classic shape of Shigaraki is called an uzukumaru. It's a squat jar that has been favored by chajin for centuries. They often have incised rope or cypress fence designs on the shoulder known as nawame or higaki. I picked this Tsujimura Kai uzukumaru out for a few reasons. First was the delightful contrast of the green glaze against the golden orange 'fire color' side. I also like the relaxed form especially in the neck. Then there's the quiet strength of the work in it wholeness of form, glazing, and 'kiln scars,' small divets and attached pieces. The front and back are very yin-yang. In 'perfect' condition with a signed box, 21.5cm.tall and 19.0cm.across, etched sign on base.
