Old Shigaraki Jar by Ueda Naokata
Here is a very rare shodai (first generation) Shigraki tsubo-jar by Ueda Naokata ( Tanii, 1805-1891). Ueda was active in the first half of the 19th century and was associated with the Kyoto nun Ohtagaki Rengetsu. He was mainly a tea potter and worked with a refined clay that resembles Bizen, as can be seen on this chatsubo, tea jar. It is very refined in its lightness and throwing, very much a shokunin craftsman work. That can be seen in the lip as well. Two small gold repairs are visible there too. Wavy incised lines circle the shoulders. The worked is stamped on the base and comes with a signed box by the fifth generation Naokata, which reads Shodai Naokata saku, Shigaraki Tsubo, Korai-gama go-dai, Naokata. 20.5cm tall, 16cm wide.
