Tamba Senmonki Bowl by Ichino Masahiko
Ichino Masahiko is creating quite a stir in the contemporary ceramic art scene for his modern Tamba wares, which call to mind the styles of Kamoda Shoji, Suzuki Goro, and the Sodeisha. This is a large "senmonki", or linear-patterned vessel, which is wonderful as an objet d'art by its sleek form. The charcoal black is made by smearing black mud/slip onto the piece, while the white lines are made by using a jagged stone and etching the surface of the piece, then smearing white slip over the lines, then firing. The orange red is made by a solution of salt water over certain sections of the piece, then firing again: all in all, one can see a meticulous working style at play. This piece is 25cm tall, 35.5cm wide, 41cm long, comes with a signed box and is in perfect condition.
