Iga Three-Tier Jubako by Hasu Yoshitaka
Hard to find good jubako---stacked boxes---by contemporary potters these days here in Japan. There are a few exceptions with one being Iga Potter Hasu Yoshitaka (1949-). Hasu ('lotus') has been around awhile, in his own quiet way. He exhibits mainly at Takashimaya and some other smaller ceramic galleries here in Japan. He studied under the late Banura Shiro starting in 1975 and established his own kiln in Ueno, Mie prefecture--home of Iga--in 1979. His first exhibition was at Takashimaya, Yokohama in 1982. His work is either quite bold with heavy ash-glazes and incised lines or subtle with smooth surfaces. This tobako is of course the former. It has a lively stamped pattern and splendid Iga glaze effects in greens, koge (scorched marks) and browns. Hasu added some glaze splashes inside each box. Each was has a depth of about 6.2cm. The three-sided box in total stands 22.5cm.tall and is 24.0cm.across. In perfect condition with a signed box. In one photo is a Hasu tokkuri which will be offered soon.
