Bizen Heart Sutra Guinomi by Takahara
It must have taken much time and concentration to carve in the 262 kanji (chinese characters) on this small Bizen guinomi. Yet whether it be for calligraphy or ceramics, The Heart Sutra is a way to show one's devotion to Zen Buddhism, and the unknown. The Heart Sutra, or Hannya Shingo in Japanese, is a central theme in Zen and there are many sites on the Internet where one can read it in English. This guinomi was made by Bizen veteran Takahara Satoshi(1934-). He started making Bizen in 1956 and has had a quiet yet successful career---I think the essence of the sutra influenced him to realize fame and big awards may not mean much at all. Yet, he has won the Sanyo Newspaper Award at the Okayama Prefectural Art Exhibition(1972) and the Kaneshige Toyo Award(1976). This guinomi is in a sangiri firing mode where coals have been introduced at the end of a firing to produce blue flashes. In perfect condition with a signed box, 6.2cm. tall and 5.6cm.across. 'Gone, gone, gone to the other shore...!'
