Akiyama Yo (1953-) is a major figure in contemporary Japanese ceramics. His work is not in the functional vessel realm nor that of the Tea world. It is dark, mysterious, and unlike anything seen since the days of Yagi Kazuo. Yagi was Akiyama's teacher at Kyoto City University of Art (where Akiyama is now a professor) and instilled in him a sense of dynamic forms and the fondness for black objets. Akiyama finds his inspiration in fact from decaying natural objects and we can see that here in this large, powerful, vibrant elliptical form. The outside is cracked and blistered rock while the inside has fissures and crevices that Akiyama creates with his blow torch. Akiyama's works have been exhibited worldwide, he's won major awards, like the Suntory Award, the Kyoto Prefecture Culture Award, and the Japan Ceramic Society Award among a list of many others, and his work is represented in the National Museums in Kyoto and Osaka, Faenza International Ceramics Museum. Italy, and the V&A Museum, U.K. 24.3cm.tall, 52.0cm.across, and 43.0cm deep, signed y.a. '02 on the back.
