Overglaze Enamel Tokkuri by Shofu Eiichi
Shofu Eiichi(1915-1991) was a porcelain ceramic master from Kyoto. He was well-known for his deeply etched designs using cobalt blue (gosu) to decorate. He also did delicate brushwork as can be seen on this hexagonal gourd-shaped sake flask. It should remind one of Tomimoto Kenkichi for in fact that is who Shofu studied with as well as Kusube Yaichi. Shofu had his first Nitten showing in 1950 and went on to enter many more exhibitions and win numerous awards including the Japan Ceramic Society Award in 1956. This lovely tokkuri has red and gold petals and a red check motif along with some gosu triangles.In perfect condition with a signed box, 15.2cm.tall and 8.4cm.across, signed on base. Shofu's work is in the Boston Museum and is also included in the 'Shaped with a Passion' exhibition that is currently touring the US. The box reads, Aka-e Kin-sai Tokkuri, Shofu Eiichi saku and has a bit of age to it....
