Oribe Vase by Kato Shigetaka
A very rugged and powerful Oribe tsubo-vase by Seto's Kato Shigetaka (1927-), the third son of Kato Tokuro and younger brother of Okabe Mineo. Shigetaka has had his own successful career winning the Japan Ceramic Society Prize and having a similar Shino work featured on the cover of the 'Modern Japanese Ceramics in American Collections' exhibition catalog published by the Japan Society, NY in 1993. This strong mountain form has incised comb (kushime) markings all along each side allowing the clay to partially show through---the Oribe glaze has pooled in some places. Kato, believe it or not, had his first exhibition in Tokyo in 1988 (this piece dates from that period), he started in clay in 1945 and helped his illustrious father as well as making his own works, including dozens of ceramic walls in buildings throughout Japan. A rare piece in perfect condition, 22.8cm. tall and 14.1cm.wide, with a signed box, Oribe Kokumon Houkou(square), Shigetaka-saku.
