Ame-yu Kokumon Henko by Murata Gen
The Japanese word for masterpiece is meihin and that's exactly what describes this henko-tsubo-jar by Murata Gen. As with his teacher Hamada Shoji, only about ten percent of a single kiln was exhibition quality---and then there are the top pieces from that small percentage. This is such a work. It has a dynamic double splash of an iron glaze on one side and minimalistic splashes on the other; they are over a light olive green glaze----around the shoulder is a nuka glaze and the inside is also glazed in a deep purple tessha glaze. The base has been left unglazed and Murata has signed the work there. For more about Murata please search this site or see DARUMA magazine issue #32.
