Tamba Yohen Tokkuri by Nishihata Tadashi
In terms of yohen ('kiln mutation') firings it doesn't get much better than this Tamba tokkuri. It was made by Nishihata Tadashi(1948-). He apprenticed to his father Sueharu(1925-) starting in 1969. The rounded form was fired on its side with ash flying, fusing and melting over the back and onto the front. It was resting on shells which allowed the drips to form---one can see three shell impressions on the front where they fused onto the work. A lot of movement in the natural ash-glaze as it wraps itself around the tokkuri yet leaving one patch of 'clay flavor' on the front. Nishihata has won numerous awards including the Tanabe Museum Modern Tea Froms Grand Prize among others and exhibits at Mitsukoshi and other fine galleries. In perfect condition with a signed box, Yohen tokkuri, Tamba, Tadashi-saku, 15.2cm.tall,10.2cm.across and 9.0cm.deep, Nishihata's mark etched on base.
