Large Shigaraki Tsubo-Jar by Tani Q (Kyu)
Tani Kyu (Q) was born in Shigaraki in 1977 and started studying at his family's studio--Seimon kiln--in 2003, of course growing up he was surrounded by clay. The Tani family is known for their sencha tea wares and graceful forms, they also own a Shigaraki antique museum where Kyu most likely played hide and seek in. He found the forms of old Shigaraki jars there as well and here is a bold jar with a classic firing of stone bursts, natural ash-glaze, 'fire color' and a rough crinkled ash-glazing front. In perfect condition with a wooden plaque (box is extra), 51cm.tall, signed on base. Here's a link to Tani's grandfather's work in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art: http://www.clevelandart.org/art/2000.153.b This tsubo would stand proud next to it......
