Shigaraki Chawan by Ogawa Seiho
Ogawa Seiho (1908-2001) was a Shigaraki chadogu-maker (Tea utensils) of the highest order. His boxes were often signed by the Iemoto of different Tea schools. There is a warmth to his chawan in their rounded forms, very Raku-like, and the classic Shigaraki firing. Here is such a chawan with its outstanding hi-iro ('fire-color') and small stone ishihaze bursts all around the body. The shomen (front) was facing the fire and a light toasty ash-glaze fell on the lip whereas inside there is a soft covering of a light yellow ash. I have never seen this on any Shigaraki chawan before. I spoke with Ogawa's granddaughter and she said it was one of his specialties. It really is quite pleasing and better in person. In perfect condition with a signed box, stamped Seiho on the outside of the kodai, 9.1cm.tall and between 12.0-13.0cm.wide; slightly elliptical.
