Shino Chawan by Miwa Ryuji
In the spirit of Momoyama Shino and Tokuro, Miwa Ryuji(1930-) has been making Shino wares for the last forty years. In a quiet and humble way he does not exhibit that much, only once every three years and in Nagoya only. Last year he was awarded the 19th Kato Kobee Award for his Shino wares. The current Kobee said of Miwa, "Miwa studies the old Mino wares and puts his knowledge and technique of those wares into his own beautiful Shino Tea wares." His work is in the Gifu Prefectural Ceramic Museum and has been exhibited at the Japan Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition, Japan Ceramic Exhibition, and the Asahi Ceramic Exhibition. Here is a warm and bold azuki-bean colored Shino chawan with ichimon-ji iron underglaze paintings. The icing-like glaze is pleasing to the eye and touch in its various hues. The base has been left unglazed and has a darker kodai due to the iron in the clay. Yubi-ato finger impressions are on the sides where Miwa held the chawan while applying the glaze. A classic work and on the level of Tokuro's chawan, which I just saw one the other day for 15 million yen. In excellent condition----there are three very tiny areas on the lip(see detail photo) where the clay is exposed--- with a signed box, 9.8cm.tall, 13.6cm.across, and 12.8cm.deep. The chawan is a little lighter in color than the photos.
