Ryukyu-Okinawa Joyaki Vase
Okinawa has a rich ceramic history with Tsuboya and Arachi styles being main wares. 'High-class' wares were called joyaki and here is a pearl onion-shaped vase with a colorful personality. In the 'Folk Kilns Book Two' published by Kodansha it says, 'The iron-rich body is covered with a white slip; ash-based glazes are made from rice-straw ash mixed with coral, to which are added portions of iron and copper; opaque green and purplish blue glazes are also found.' This vase has such colorations with olive, summer bamboo, and melon greens in a soft crackled glaze dancing over the rounded form. Inside the wide lip is an iron ame-yu and a greenish-blue glaze is found just under the lip. A small iron indention is on the body as is a small fragment from another pot fused under the glaze. The white slip is seen clearly on the base. A rare and lovely work dating back about fifty years. In excellent condition, 19.8cm.tall and 11.7cm.across
