Tenmoku Guinomi by Kobayashi Togo
Kobayashi Togo (1935-) was born in Kyoto but moved to the island of Tsushima off Kyushu in 1983. The reason for the move was to get away from the distractions of Kyoto and also to be closer to Korea. Kobayashi is a master of Korean styles; Mishima, Ido, Hakeme, Oku-gorai, Tetsu-e, and others. He's also a master calligrapher and seal engraver. The hakogaki ('box writing') for this deep and subtle guinomi reads tenmoku but the actual cup has more of a hikidashi-guro feel. The depth of the black on this guinomi is very intense; very few Japanese potters can get do what Kobayashi has done here. In fact, I can only think of one or two. It's fired in a Korean style with a gritty base and sand flecks here and there. Many folks would think it's a 13th-14th C. Korean Korai cup. The lip is slightly flared and makes a perfect drinking lip. The guinomi overall is very well-balanced. In perfect condition with a signed box, 5.5cm.tall and 7.0cm.across.
