Six 'Mud' Jizo Figures- Edo Period
Have you ever seen the avant-garde Japanese dance troupe San-Kai-Juku? If not, please do if they ever pass through your town. Members of this incredible group look like the figures you see here. These are deibutsu; mud Buddhas or roku (six) Jizo deibutsu. They have a divine presence about them and in the 'right' place with understated lighting they will be magical. These came from the Shikoku, an island off the coast of Honshu, where pilgrims trek between eighty-eight temples. I believe these are from one of those temples and date from the early Edo period, circa 18th C. They stand on wooden pegs atop an Ema board and appear to be from two different moulds. A few cracks on two figures but overall in fine condition. They were painted and that has worn off. I can't finish writing this for I just keep staring at them and become lost in 'mindless' thought...... Each stands approx. 11.3cm.tall and is 3.0cm.across and 2.5cm wide.
