Tobe Mizusashi by Nakamoto Chikuzan
Nakamoto Chikuzan ('Bamboo Mountain' 1910-2001) was a Tobe Pottery Intangible Cultural Property. Tobe pottery is a porcelain style started in 1777 on the island of Shikoku by Sugino Josuke. This sansui-e or 'mountain-water' landscape on this immaculate water jar mizusashi takes its theme from Chinese hanging scrolls. Many scenes can be observed over the rounded form; a hermit is crossing a bridge, a boat crusies on the water, distant mountains are painted in pale coblt blue, while the nearer landscapes are much darker. It doesn't get much better than this for control and finesse of the brush, which is obviously why Nakamoto received the designation he did. Comes with a signed box, 'Tobe-yaki, Sometsuke Sansui-e Mizusashi,' and Nihon Kogei Kai Seikai-in, Tobe machi Mukei Bunka-zai, Chikuzan-saku' on the back of the lid. Signed 'Tobe Chikuzan' on the base of the mizusashi, 18.5cm.tall with lid, and 21.5cm. across.
