Kuro Chawan by Itaka Kizan
Itaka Kizan (1881-1967) was one of Japan's most famous Tea utensils makers of the 20th century. He was born in Hyogo prefecture and studied pottery at art school. In 1904 his work was sent to the St.Louis Expo where it won the Silver Prize. After that he studied with Miyanaga KozanI and established his own kiln in Tokyo in 1920. Here is a rare ko-buri (small) Black chawan. It has a jet black original glaze that was pulled out of the kiln at the height of firing---a hikidashi chawan. Tong marks can be seen on the side. A shade of brown is on parts of the lip and in the splendid mikomi-pool. Itaka's chawan is very well balanced with a slight weight in the base. It was made when he was 83 and comes with a signed box by his son, the second Kizan. The son also sent me a nice letter about the chawan and that will be included with the chawan. In perfect condition, 7.5cm.tall and 10.0cm.wide.
