Ochiai Miyoko
Black-White Sgraffito Henko by Ochiai Miyoko
Based on Northern Song Dynasty (11th-12th century China) Cizhou wares, this ovoid form is by Ochiai Miyoko. Ochiai studied with the late great Kyoto avant-garde ceramic artist Suzuki Osamu and established her kiln in 1977 near Kyoto in Shiga prefecture. In 1994 she was awarded the Shiga Prefectural Cultural Prize. I love the shape of this pieces as well as the charming design. A large flower (possibly a peony..?) was drawn by scratching over the white slip to reveal the black slip underneath, thus creating the lively design. In Japanese this is called kakiotoshi (sgraffito) and was invented in the Cizhou kilns. A butterfly flutters on the back side of the piece and a few finger impressions can be seen where Ochiai held the piece while applying the slip. In perfect condition with a signed box, Kuroji Shiro Kakiotoshi Kamon Henko, 23.5cm.tall,18.0cm.across, and 10.cm.deep. Ochiai's mark is etched on the base.
