n the 1973 book called 'Kama-betsu, Gendai no Tougei' (Individual kilns, Contemporary Pottery) by the late Kuroda Ryoji he wrote that seven potters were the upcoming stars of Mino. Among them was Hayashi Kotaro (1940-1981), the others are Kato SeizoXlll(1930-deceased), Suzuki Osamu(current Shino Living National Treasure), Matsuyama Suketoshi(1916-), Kato Kozo ( Gifu LNT), Tamaoki Yasuo, Ando Hidetaka, and Okuiso Eiroku(1930-1987). All created and some still create some of the finest Mino pottery ever seen in Japan's long history. Hayashi was a pioneer in a sense and that can be seen in this lively Shino tsubo-jar. Under the thickly feldspar (choseki-yu) glaze Hayashi painted Zen-like Enso circles that show up bluish near the surface of the light pink crackled glaze. The movement of the design gives the tsubo a Jomon-esque feel to it. The full form tapers off near the base and that's where yubi-ato or 'finger impressions' can be seen. This is where Hayashi held the piece as he dipped it in the glaze. The inside is glazed as well. On the base can be seen hi-iro or 'fire color' and Hayashi's mark. A great piece that will add to and broaden any collection. Perfect condition with a signed box, 24.8cm.tall and 19.3cm.wide.
