Bizen Yohen Vase by Koyama Suehiro
This Bizen mimitsuki (eared) yohen (kiln changes) vase by Koyama Suehiro (1948-) has attitude. It's carefree posture is due to the fine shape and the well-placed ears; it all comes together and 'talks' about the beauty of form, firing, and clay. The subdued shibui firing is perfect for flowers. It also stands alone just fine as a sculptural work. The vase was fired on its side and has a fine crusty ash body as well as areas where another piece was touching it; these are the clay patches seen at the bottom and around the lip. Koyama studied with the late Okayama Prefectural Intangible Cultural Property Kaneshige Sozan (Toyo's younger brother). Koyama has had a very successful career winning awards at the Tanabe Museum Modern Tea Form exhibition ('85, '99) as well as the Okayama Art exhibition ('79, '83). He's exhibited throughout Japan and in 1999 had a one-man exhibition at Mitsukoshi, Tokyo; his ninth there. I'll include the catalog with the price list from that exhibition with this hanaire-vase.
