Jar / Eiichi Shofu
Porcelain Cobalt Blue Jar- Eiichi Shofu
During the Showa period in Kyoto many artists were involved with making new and bold designs with sometsuke or underglaze cobalt blue. Yuzo Kondo was named a Living National Treasure for his sometsuke in 1977. Eiichi Shofu(1915-1991), who made this wonderful sometsuke tsubo, was born in Kyoto and studied with Kenkichi Tomimoto and Yaichi Kusube. Shofu had an illustrious career winning many prizes, serving on numerous art committees and having his work purchased by the Boston Museum. Here is a very fine tsubo with incised drawings of bamboo which have been covered with a rich sometsuke glaze and then a transparent glaze has been applied over that. The blues vary in tones and the milky white porcelain body offers a pleasing contrast. Very much in the Kondo style yet more refined. Perfect condition with signed box. 24.0cm.tall and 27cm.wide. Quite heavily potted- circa 1970
