Shino Kabura-Turnip Tsubo by Hayashi Kotaro
Few can match the natural kabura(turnip) and tsurukubi(crane's neck) shape of this hi-iro-fire color Shino tsubo by Hayashi Kotaro(1940-1981). I've seen only one potter come close and that was Kaneshige Toyo's younger brother Sozan(1909-1996). Hayashi was amongst a group of Shino potters that drew the attention of the pottery world back in the 1970s- including Wakao Toshisada(1933-) and Ando Hidetake(1938-). After forming the tsubo, Hayashi took a trimming tool around the base creating wide wavy lines. The feldspar Shino glaze was thickly applied on the neck and on one side and the characteristic Shino crackles are delightful- like icing. A splendid hi-iro fire color, which is very prized on Shino- creates an engaging 'landscape' towards the base on one side. Hayashi passed on much too early, like Kamoda Shoji, and his brother Shotaro is now an outstanding Shino potter as well. Perfect condition, signed box, 'Shino tsubo, Kotaro'- mark on base. 21.6cm.tall and 15.0cm.across.
