Silver Striped Vase by Hayashi Mamiko/Previews
It's been a number of years since we last offered the work of Hayashi Mamiko(b.1959). Hayashi is an elegant ceramic artist who after graduating from prestigious Keio University started her ceramic career in 1985 studying with Ito Keiji at the Gifu City Ceramic Art Institute. She has had a gallery based career thereafter. This platinum-striped-white square vase has the appearance of marble. The consistency--and thinness--of the platinum stripes took a steady hand indeed. Hayashi has told me a square form is extremely difficult to make. In perfect condition with a signed box, 26.2cm.tallx26.7x11.7, signed on base. An article I wrote for the Japan Times about Hayashi can be read here: http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/fc20000722ry.html Hayashi's bio goes: 1959 Born in Tokyo, Japan 1982 Bachelor of Arts in Aesthetics and Science of Arts, Keio University, Japan 1985 Completed Tajimi City Pottery Design and Technical Center, Gifu, Japan 1985 - 1989 Apprenticeship with Keiji Ito 1986 Incentive Award, Asahi Contemporary Crafts Exhibition 1991 Set up her own studio in Yokohama, Japan 1992 Theme/Division Award, Japan Crafts Exhibition 1999 TV appearance on "Style," CNN, United States 2002, 2003, 2004 Christie's auctions (Japanese and Korean Art Dept.), New York 2004 TV appearance on "Utsuwa-Dream Studio," NHK BS2, Japan 1995 - present Solo exhibitions at Ecru+HM (Ginza, Tokyo), Gallery Shun (Hiroo, Tokyo), Tosai (Shinbashi, Tokyo), Tokyo American Club (Takanawa, Tokyo), Akasaka Inui Gallery (Akasaka, Tokyo), Utsuwa Salon Kei (Toyama, Japan) Group exhibitions at Kandori (Hotel New Otani, Tokyo) 2000, 2010, 2011 Instructor at Citizens' Workshop, Yokohama Museum of Art, Japan
