Chawan / Iga / Gifu / Kishimoto Kennin
Masterpiece Iga Chawan by Kishimoto Kennin
Kishimoto Kennin(b.1934) has been a potter since 1960 when he entered the Mino world after working at a large production kiln. He has fired Shino, Ki-Seto, Oribe, Iga, and celadon---he's a master of the art of fire. He shows mainly at Takashimaya, Tokyo and Hankyu, Osaka and his work is in the Yale University Museum of Art and the Burke Collection, NYC.; part of the Burke Collection has toured Japan and is a very important private collection of Japanese art. Iga is especially noted for mizusashi and hanaire-vases since the late 15th century; we rarely see chawan or shuki from that period. Kishimoto's shizen-yu natural ash glaze Iga chawan is dignified with a stunning form and firing combined with superb 'clay flavor.' Kishimoto liked this chawan so much he gave it an outer and inner boxes. A museum piece in perfect condition, 9cm.tallx13x12, signed on base.
