Shigaraki Jar by Kon Chiharu
Kon Chiharu (b.1951) fires an anagama in the 'snow country' of Niigata, a region known for its fine rice and sake. Kon established his kiln there in 1980 after finishing an apprenticeship with the legendary Tokyo-based Shigaraki potter Tsuji Seimei. His firing follows in Seimei's tradition, with similar displays of exceptional hi-iro (fire color) and shizenyu natural ash glaze. This is surely seen on the quite fantastic jar fired on shells; I'm sure that it was only one of two he gets from any one firing. The way the natural ash-glaze drips and pooled--dragon-fly eyes--combined with the very fine 'clay flavor' tsuchi-aji and total glassy ash covering on the back makes this piece not only rare, yet also very beautiful. In perfect condition with a signed box, 24.5cm.tall and 23cm.across, sign is covered by glaze.
