Bizen Guinomi by Living National Treasure Fujiwara Kei
I sincerely doubt there is a finer Fujiwara Kei hidasuki--rice-straw wrapped--tokkuri than the one seen here; the Japanese say meihin (meaning masterpiece) and for Fujiwara and his hidasuki tokkuri this is a meihin. The form is ripe with the orange-red lines crisscrossing over the front, and that one wispy line on the back is an elegant counterpoint. The 'clay flavor' is also superb; it dates to the year Fujiwara was named a Living National Treasure, 1970. His love for sake is well-known and thus he made some of the finest sake vessels of the 20th century. The guinomi is shibui and refined, I showed it to a local craftsman carpenter the other day and he said I have no seen anything so perfect in a long time; agree, for sippuing sake the form-pool and size, the foot and lip all harmonize in guinomi perfection. The tokkuri is 13.5cm.tallx10, signed on side, signed box and is sold. The guinomi is 4.8cm.tallx7x6.5, signed on side, signed box and is 100,000 yen. Kampai!
