Sekkei Chawan by Kako Katsumi
Good news for two of our favorite ceramic artists, Gomi Kenji was awarded the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibtion Prize and Grand Prize Runner-Up, while Kako Katsumi's sekkei chawan was selected to be shown in the same exhibition this spring; a catalog will be made. Kako's brown chawan was awarded at the upcoming Tanabe Museum's Contemporary Tea Forms Exhibition and is very similar to the one also previewed here. Thumbing through a past catalog of the very prestigious Japan Ceramic Art juried exhibition, I came across only four chawan, and two of those were by living national treasures! This biennial exhibition focuses mostly on larger works and to have a chawan accepted is quite rare and a great honor. More about the JCA exhibition with photos can be viewed at www.e-yakimono.net In the upcoming exhibition Kako has a chawan---sekkei means snowy landscape--very similar to this one (photo attached of the JCA chawan). It has a thickly applied action-painting style white glaze over the stoneware body; faceted and oval it fits nicely in the hands. A dynamic chawan in perfect condition with a signed box, 9.5cm.tallx14x13, signed on base.
